Measure L Bond Update

Thanks to the generous support of the Lawndale community, LESD was tremendously fortunate to see Measure L pass this fall. It will infuse much needed resources to support to our buildings, which have gone without deferred maintenance for many years since the state dissolved that funding source.

The first step in moving these projects into action was undertaken on March 21st with the completion of the initial sale of $10 million in bonds. Now that funding is available, project planning can get underway. School construction is bound by extensive rules and regulations to both ensure the safety of students and staff and to ensure fair processes are used throughout. Karla Bertran, our Director of Purchasing, will start the process by going out to bid for contractors who may be interested in completing our work. This is a lengthy legal process and we are fortunate to have Mrs. Bertran leading this challenging charge.

A detailed review of our facilities status by Jorge Ramirez, our Director of Maintenance and Operations, has helped our construction team to prioritize projects that will begin this summer. We also partnered with our Educational Services team, the Food Services department and RAP leadership to coordinate student summer activities and ensure stu-dent safety throughout this process.

At this time, projects that are planned to take place during the Summer of 2017 include:
 New roofing at Anderson, FDR and Green
 Exterior painting at Rogers, Addams, Anderson and Green

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) replacements will begin near the close of the summer and will be eventually completed at each school site.

Once these projects get underway, we will immediately begin planning for the Summer of 2018. So, if you don’t see your school on the list now, know that we are coming your way soon! Coordinating projects of this magnitude requires extensive collaboration of all school district entities and detailed planning.

Again, we are so pleased to be able to finally invest in our school facilities and create optimal learning environments for our students. It will certainly be a busy summer for the LESD Business Department, but the hard work will pay off when students and staff are able to return to beautifully upgraded campuses.
