Google Brings CS First Roadshow to Smith Elementary

Google visited Lawndale to roll out CS First Roadshow, a computer science education program that had Lucille Smith Elementary School 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders creating an adventure on the high seas and learning about computer coding in the process. The CS First Roadshow teaches students about the importance of STEM education and uses interactive activities to teach them coding basics while encouraging students to develop an interest in computer science education and growing both their problem solving and technical coding skills

“Many Smith students have already been working on computer coding projects in their classrooms using Google CS First since the beginning of the school year, and this event was important in demonstrating how computer science can be used in real life,” stated Dr. Rosa Isiah, Principal at Lucille Smith Elementary.

Assemblymember Autumn Burke and Lawndale Mayor Robert Pullen-Miles participated in the presentation. Assemblymember Burke kicked off the presentation by discussing the importance of technology and learning about computer science. Two Google employees then delivered the hour-long presentation, which focused on teaching students both problem solving and technical coding skills. They closed the presentation encouraging the students to develop an interest in computer science education and informing them how a STEM education can lead to exciting educational opportunities and careers.

“The Lawndale Elementary School District is committed to providing 21st century learning environments to its students. We are grateful to Assemblymember Burke and Google for bringing this one-of-a-kind experience to Smith Elementary students—and hopefully sparking a life-long interest in computer science within many of our students,” said Dr. Ellen Dougherty, Superintendent of the Lawndale Elementary School District.
