Dear Lawndale Family,

As our community is experiencing high temperatures this week, Lawndale Elementary School District is implementing heat protocols to help ensure that our students, staff and schools remain as cool as possible.

  • All students and staff should be in air-conditioned or shaded areas as much as possible.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and drink water throughout the day.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and wear sunscreen.
  • Students should immediately tell their teacher or another adult if they feel ill due to the heat.

Thank you for your continued support, and try to stay cool!

We are excited to announce that FDR Elementary is one of the 22 schools in California that will participate in this year's Grades of Green Trash Free Lunch Challenge. Read below for more information.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! CELEBRATED WASTE REDUCTION CONTEST KICKS-OFF FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

22 So Cal Schools will reduce over 300 tons of trash in Grades of Green’s7th Annual Trash Free Lunch Challenge

WHITTIER, Calif., October 9th, 2017 - When it comes to lunchtime trash, less is definitely more. That’s the lesson environmental education nonprofit Grades of Green wants to teach students as the organization kicks off its seventh annual Trash Free Lunch Challenge (TFLC).

Students from participating schools will learn how to decrease waste by packing trash-free lunches (such as reusable lunch containers, water bottles and utensils, and cloth napkins). All students, including those who buy lunch, will also learn how to sort lunchtime waste to be donated, composted and recycled.

Through a combination of sorting waste and bringing reusable lunch containers, TFLC schools reduce an average of 70 percent of lunchtime waste; winning schools reduce over 92 percent of trash. In total, 117 schools have diverted 2,300 tons of waste from the landfill since the Challenge began seven years ago. This year, Challenge participants are on track to reduce at least 300 tons!

While these metrics speak to the program’s success in helping schools protect our environment and divert waste, the real results are the environmental values students take home. “The goal of the Trash Free Lunch Challenge is not only to reduce waste but also to teach children how to reuse, recycle and compost. Educating students through programs such as these furthers our mission of converting waste into resources in the communities we serve,” said Grace Hyde, Sanitation Districts’ Chief Engineer and General Manager.

“Grades of Green’s goal with our Trash Free Lunch Challenge is to help participating schools start lasting green programs to instill environmental and waste reduction habits that will stay with students for a lifetime,” said Allie Bussjaeger, Director of Regional Programs at Grades of Green. “We are changing the course of the future by making environmental protection second nature in young minds today.”

WHAT IS GRADES OF GREEN’S TRASH FREE LUNCH CHALLENGE?

Grades of Green's Trash Free Lunch Challenge is a yearlong competition where Southern California schools challenge each other to see which school can reduce the most lunchtime waste. Grades of Green teaches students to reduce trash by bringing reusable lunch containers and using lunchtime waste sorting systems. This ultimately forms habits that will protect the environment for years to come. Through fun, educational assemblies, personalized eco-starter kits, waste reduction plans, and Grades of Green Advisors available to personally guide each school, Grades of Green helps create an environment where every school can be a winner! A panel of environmental experts will evaluate the implementation and success of the three finalists’ trash reduction programs. The winning schools (one elementary and one middle school) will receive a Grand Prize of a $1,000 education grant.

Lawndale, CA, August 21, 2017– Over the summer, Lawndale Elementary School District (LESD) undertook several projects to improve their facilities and provide their students with high quality learning environments.

Two of the major projects were funded by Measure L, a general obligation bond approved by the Lawndale community in November 2016. Measure L will provide the Lawndale Elementary School District with $27,000,000 to improve outdated and worn facilities. Thanks to the community’s support, LESD’s facilities have undergone a major makeover, which includes:

1.         New Paint:  The Addams, Rogers, Anderson, and Green campuses received fresh coats of paint. This project has had a significant visual impact on the schools and improved the look of the surrounding community.

2.         New Roofing:  The Green, FDR and Anderson campuses received new roofs. While the visual improvement is not as drastic as the paint job, the district will not see as many leaks as they have over the past few years!

In addition to the aforementioned Measure L projects, the district also completed the following projects:

1.         Installing a sound fence along Marine Ave. for FDR Elementary.

2.         Projector Installation:  Interactive projectors have been installed in all LESD classrooms.

3.         New Water Fountains:  One new water fountain per campus will be installed at Mitchell, Twain, and FDR Elementary Schools. They will include a chiller, a water bottle filling station, and an upgraded filter. Students and staff will be well-hydrated.

4.         Fencing/Gates:  New fences and gates have gone up at Mitchell and Green Elementary Schools to improve the appearance of the campuses and support student needs.

5.         Grounds work: the LESD maintenance team worked throughout the summer to keep our campuses looking clean and inviting.

“All of this work would not have been possible without our Business Services Department’s concerted effort to support our students—a huge thank you to our Accounting, Purchasing, Maintenance, Food Services, and Technology teams! None of this work could have been completed without their perseverance. We are excited for our students and families to enjoy the updated facilities!” said Dr. Betsy Hamilton, LESD Superintendent.
