INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM FEATURES The instructional program in the Lawndale Elementary School District emphasizes a strong academic program based on the State curriculum frameworks and standards. Special programs, interventions, and enrichment support student learning at all grade levels. Students are encouraged to strive for academic excellence and to grow in personal and physical skills.
It is important to have good attendance in order not to miss any instruction and for your child to get the most from his or her education. It is also very important that your child arrive on time for school. Your child should come to school about 15 minutes before school begins each morning. Children should not miss school except for illness, medical appointments, or bereavement. Staying home to help watch other children or help around the house is not acceptable and is against the law. A note or telephone call from the parents to verify a child’s absence is required. However, absences for illness can only be excused by a physician, nurse, or medical personnel. SCHOOL DISCIPLINE Each school may have additional school-wide rules. Each classroom also will display the rules that apply to that particular room. Rules are reasonable and help maintain a safe, positive school environment. Every school has a library. Your child may check out books and bring them home. Please be sure your child cares for the books and brings them back on time. You will be responsible for lost books. Homework will usually be assigned every day, Monday through Thursday. The teacher will always explain the assignment to your child before assigning the work. Set aside a place in your home for your child to do his/her work and encourage your child to complete the assignments to the best of his/her ability each day. Lawndale School District encourages parents and other family members to be involved in their children’s education. A variety of opportunities to volunteer exist at every school. Contact your school office for information. The Parent Teacher Organization (PTA) at each school is one way to become involved. The PTA makes a valuable contribution to the educational program at each school. They provide parent information and support the teachers in a wide variety of projects that benefit all students. The membership drive begins in October and information will come home with your child. The membership fee is very reasonable. The Family-School Partnership Act (Chapter 1290, Statutes of 1994) allows parents to take off up to 40 hours from work per child every school year to participate in their child’s school activities. Each school has a health clerk, and a nurse is available in case your child is injured at school. If your child is injured at school, we will apply first aid and, if necessary, call you. If we suspect a serious injury, we will immediately contact the paramedics, then notify you. The “Partners for Healthy Kids” van parks in front of Rogers Middle School or Carson Elementary every Thursday, switching schools each week, September through July, offering health services to Lawndale students and their siblings (up to 18 years old) free of charge. Appointments are made through the school site health clerks. The school does not provide accident insurance for students injured at school. The district has arranged for a private insurance carrier to provide low-cost accident insurance for students. The cost is paid by the parents, and participation is optional. Insurance forms are available at each school. Parents wishing to participate send forms and payment directly to the insurance carrier. Registration papers are available at the office of the local school. If parents or guardians work during the day, you need to provide your daytime telephone number and address to the school, so you can be reached if it is ever necessary to do so. The school must also have the names and phone numbers of two people outside of your home to call in case of an emergency. Children must be at least 5 years of age by December 2nd to enter kindergarten in September. To enroll your child, you need to provide proof of residency and the child’s date of birth. Also, you must provide proof that the child’s immunizations are up-to-date and that he or she has had a Mantoux TB test and an oral health assessment before he or she can enter school. For immunizations or the TB test, you can go to Crenshaw Family Medical Group in Gardena (310) 327-8746 or the Torrance Health Care Center (310) 354-2300. Immunizations are also available to families with no health insurance at the “Healthy Kids Van”. (See “Healthcare” above.) Your child can buy lunch and/or breakfast in the cafeteria and can buy milk or juice to accompany lunch brought from home. Parents are encouraged to pay for meals in advance as a convenience to students. Some families may qualify for free or reduced cost breakfasts and lunches. Please contact the Food Services Department or the school office for more information and/or an application. 6th, 7th, AND 8th GRADE SUPPLIES Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students are asked to have a three-ring, loose-leaf notebook with divider pages, a zippered plastic pouch, two pencils and an erasable blue or black pen. A book bag or backpack is a convenient way to carry books and materials. The District operates a free preschool program for 3 and 4 year olds who reside within District boundaries. There are morning and afternoon programs at Addams, Anderson, Carson, Green, Mitchell, and Twain Schools. There are also two free home visiting programs, HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) for familes of children 3-5 years old and PAT (Parents as Teachers) for families of children 0-2 years of age. Both programs provide free books, materials, and great ideas. The goals are to help both children and parents develop the skills needed to insure academic success in the future. Click here for more information, or call the Preschool Office at 310-644-8458. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS The Realizing Amazing Potential (RAP) Before and After School Program is an exciting and fun program for kids in Kindergarten through 8th grade. RAP provides homework assistance, academic support and fun learning activities during the before and after school hours. |
